After a long ordeal with a lot of wrong turns, FINALLY… I’ve managed to print a single volume collection containing all the comics from my 30dayOTPchallenge and NSFWchallenge ;w;
I was really determined never to print this thing because the format was so poor for printing; you can see from the page examples that I had to resort to some wonky stuff to fit these comics to the pages. I think I just realized as I neared the end of the last challenge, that I had spent so much time on this story, and I really loved the version of Sherlock and John who emerged from it, and so I wanted to put them together in a nice print volume. There is something amazingly satisfying about putting together a book. Also, something very final. It felt like good closure for this little story.
Because the material is super adult, finding a printer who would actually accept it was a challenge; I rush ordered copies from DoujinPress for the first run (100 copies) and am either going with them again or Transcontinental for a second run. The books will ONLY BE AVAILABLE AT CONVENTIONS, will be one per person, and will require an ID to buy. I have to restrict the number because I have so few, and it’d be unfair if ten people came by and bought ten each and that was it. Please don’t ask me to sell them online, I don’t have the time or facilities to ship books, much less adult material.
Because of the book thickness (176 pages!!) and short work time, the cost for this first run will be quite high; each book is going to cost $60. To make up some of the cost, I got some extra goodies printed up to add to the package for this run (a doublesided postcard, a mini print and a bookmark!), and am putting them together in cute envelopes~ I’m hoping I can bring the print cost down and will hopefully be able to charge less for them in the future.
I’m super happy with the book quality; full color, perfect bound, with a matte cover, 6x9 inches (a little larger than a manga tankōbon) and about half an inch thick. It’s the thickest book I’ve ever printed, the most time consuming, and the most stressful! There were some points in the whole process where I began to think it would not be printed at all. So I was really happy when I finally held the proof in my hands. It’s been really frustrating in a lot of ways; these comics, to me, are about a loving and sweet relationship, but because I chose to depict the explicit aspects of this relationship I’ve run into so much trouble with printers over it. I’ve had the book treated with disgust and insulted, I’ve been rejected by printers who initially said they printed adult content (who changed their minds once they saw the actual book), I had a printer try to hike the price on me at the last minute specifically because of the amount of graphic content, and it was only by some incredible chance that the place I’m currently using has been working out. Granted, I won’t have the books until next week, so I’m not getting my hopes up too high just in case something goes south, but it’s still much more promising than things were two weeks ago :))
If all goes well, and the books get in on time and look correct, I’ll be selling them at Fanime at the end of May. I’m planning another run just in case I run out so I will have them at AX and APE as well.
Thanks everyone for your support on this comic so far; it’s been a really positive experience and made me love these two and their relationship even more, knowing that others love them too.
